Safely cross the road to the right-hand side, stop parallel and close to the kerb, reverse back a short distance under full control with effective all-round observations, then rejoin the traffic safely when it’s clear.
Approach (choose a safe place & set up)
- Choose a safe, legal spot: Avoid near junctions, driveways, bus stops, brow of a hill or sharp bends. Think about visibility and space for others to pass. For general parking/waiting rules, see the Highway Code (Waiting & Parking).
- Build your plan early: Mirrors first, assess oncoming traffic and what’s behind you. Signal right only if it helps others understand you’re crossing to stop.
- Cross the road smoothly: When safe, move across at a gentle angle. Keep speed low to read and respond to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- Stop parallel and close: Aim ~20–30 cm from the kerb, wheels straight, car parallel.
Routine & reference points (reverse a short distance)
- Secure & prepare: Handbrake if needed. Select reverse and prepare the car to move at a slow creep.
- Observations: Full 360° check before reversing. Look mainly out of the rear/over left shoulder (towards the kerb on your side now), with regular glances ahead. If pedestrians or vehicles approach, pause and let them pass.
- Reverse under control: Keep the car slow and straight, staying close to the kerb for about 2 car lengths (or as directed). Avoid dry steering; tiny corrections while moving are best.
- Kerb-distance check: In your left door mirror, the kerb should appear as a thin, even strip (not a wide band) running parallel to the car. If it’s widening, you’re drifting towards the kerb; if it’s vanishing, you’re drifting away — add small steering nudges while moving to keep ~20–30 cm.
Reversing aids & rejoining priorities
- Camera/sensors: Helpful for spotting low obstacles or judging distance, but they do not replace your observations. Use them briefly; keep your head moving and check mirrors/windows frequently.
- Rejoin when safe: When asked to move off, do a full 360° check. Use mirrors, signal left if it helps others, and a final right-shoulder blind-spot check before steering back to the left side. Give way to anyone already on the road — you don’t have priority.

Typical examiner wording for this manoeuvre:
“When it’s safe to do so, please pull up on the right. I’d then like you to reverse back for about two car lengths, keeping close to the kerb. When you’re ready, drive on and rejoin the traffic.”
- Plan & indicate if helpful: Mirrors first. If it benefits others, signal right to show you’re moving across to stop.
- Cross to the right: Choose a safe gap. Steer across smoothly at low speed; watch oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- Stop parallel & close: About 20–30 cm from the kerb, wheels straight. Secure the car if needed.
- Select reverse & prepare: Set a gentle bite (or control creep in auto). Keep the speed walking pace or slower.
- 360° observations: Before the car moves, check all around — including over your shoulders. Give way to anyone approaching.
- Reverse back: Keep close and parallel to the kerb for roughly two car lengths. Look mainly behind; glance ahead for updates. Pause if anything approaches.
- Stop & secure: When asked distance is done, secure the car if necessary and prepare to move off.
- Move off safely: Full 360° check. Mirrors, signal left if it helps, final right-shoulder blind-spot check, then steer back to the left side when fully clear. Build speed progressively.
- Kerb-distance cue: In the left mirror, aim for a slim, even strip of kerb visible — that’s roughly 20–30 cm. If it grows, you’re too close; if it fades, you’re drifting away.
- Don’t force priority: You’re manoeuvring — others have priority. Pause and let them pass.
- Camera/sensors are aids only: Use them briefly; keep observing all around with head and mirrors.
- Keep it slow: Slow car, fast hands. Tiny steering inputs while moving prevent dry steering and keep it neat.
- Signals: Use only if they benefit someone; avoid misleading flashes that suggest you’re pulling out again.
Why: Misjudged gap or rushing.
Fix: Read closing speeds. If in doubt, wait — you’re about to stop anyway. Move across smoothly, not sharply.

Why: Looking only ahead or at the camera.

Why: Tunnel vision after reversing neatly.
Fix: Build a habit: mirrors → indicate (if helpful) → right-shoulder blind-spot → go.

Why: Screen fixation.
Fix: Camera is a quick reference only. Keep scanning for people stepping between parked cars, prams, dogs, cyclists.
